Glad of some substantial rain today in increasingly dry spring times. We managed to harrow and roll all the grassland and now wait for the grass to start growing. Bob the cob is looking at the completed job, which actually was earmarked for him. Time was against us and we resorted to the tractor. A substantial job for the real horsepower to look forward to next year.

Mother and son munching their bedding straw. Still snug inside the barn until it‘s time to go out for the first time, our three calves have thrived. It was the first calving for the Shetland heifers and they have proved to be wonderful mothers. We have high hopes for this little chap that in time he may become a breeding bull in the National Herd. Some news from the veg garden: we’re now offering some tender and delicious greens to our veg box customers. Thanks to these glass cloches, purslane and lamb’s lettuce grew well over winter. 6 weeks old and what a stunner. But I may be biased... He is now officially known as St Giles Jethro, registered with the Shetland Cattle Herdbook Society. It‘s a good feeling to help keep a rare breed alive in a small way. And what an important role fungi play in the interplay of species in the natural world.
